Back to Forward Thinking

Music and the Elements

About the Album

This debut album, a dialogue between the historic and the futuristic, includes a modern Verne Powell flute made from grenadilla wood, an historic material, and the one-and-only Verne Powell #365 Platinum Flute created for the 1939 World's Fair: an instrument that pushed the future possibilities of the flute to unprecedented sound and design.

The music itself walks between 300 years of forward thinkers and innovators of older styles: J. S. Bach with modernist Kalevi Aho; the neoclassicist Sergei Prokofiev, with the great Pierre Boulez.

Kalevi Aho: Solo iii
J.S. Bach: Partita in a minor BWV 1013
Pierre Boulez: Sonatine
Steven Beck, piano
Sergei Prokofiev: Sonata in D major, Op. 94
